Where is the fastest elevator in the world today?

The fastest elevator in the world today is installed in the iconic Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai, with height 830 meters. The Burj Khalifa is currently the tallest building in the world, designed by the American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merill, located in the centre of the newly-developed quarter of Downtown Dubai. The elevator runs on a speed of 20,5 m/sec, or 64 km/hour, running a distance of 504 meters, through 163 building floors.

The elevator is double-store, with aerodynamic shape which diminishes the hissing sound created when the cabin is moving with great speed through the narrow shaft. Also, the cabin features air pressure regulators, for the health and safety of the passengers. For increased comfort, the elevator also has electronic vibration dampers. The elevator’s sensors record vibrations from earthquakes or other causes and send the data to the counterweight, which eliminates the vibrations.

This super-fast elevator is not the only means of vertical transportation in the Burj Khalifa. The skyscraper has a total of 57 elevators, as well as 8 escalators for passenger use.

Since 1955, the Guiness World Record holds a special category for the Fastest Elevator in the world. Fifty years ago, the fastest elevator developed a speed of 426 m/hour which equals with 25,6 km/hour.
