The inspection and certification of the elevator from a Notified Accredited Body (by the National Accreditation System) ensures its conformity and harmonisation with the current European Technical Specifications and the national Greek legislation in force. During the inspection, all the crucial safety systems of the elevator are tested and any deficiencies or deviations from the regulations are confirmed. Upon their repair, any danger of accident is eliminated, and the elevator receives the legal Certificate for its operation.
The inspection and certification of an elevator is required in three cases:
- during the initial installation of an elevator in a newly-constructed building, at which stage the Initial Inspection takes place.
- in order to certify an existing elevator. First, a Pre-Inspection takes place, which determines all the necessary works for the renovation of the machine in conformity with the current regulations. After these are completed, the Final Inspection leads to the issuing of the Certificate. The validity of the certificate depends on the frequency or use of the specific elevator.
- for the Renewal of the Certification. Depending on the building’s use and the number of floors the elevator serves (building of public or increased use, commercial or home) a Periodical Inspection needs to take place every one (1) to six (6) years. During the periodical inspection any wearing is observed, and the Certificate is reissued after their repair.
The confirmation of the good condition of elevators by an accredited independent body is part of the national Greek legislation, according to the relevant Ministry Decrees as published in the Official Journal 2604/Β/22-12-2008 and the Official Journal 1047/Β’/13-04-2016.
According to the abovementioned Official Journals, elevators subject to Certification are:
- New elevators installed in buildings with Building Permit dated after 01/07/1999 and subject to the provisions of the European Directive 95/16/EC and standards ELOT EN 81-1, 2 /1998 (CE marking).
- Elevators operating under a legal operation permit before 1980.
- Elevators operating under a legal operation permit (or pre-permit of installation) after 1980.
- Elevators operating without any legal permit.
